It was a bright sunny day with scarcely a cloud in the sky as the small boy and the elderly woman walked hand in hand down Hollywood Boulevard. They were lurking on the fringes knowing they would never realize the bright spotlight of fame or fortune and were only concerned about their next meal or their next fix. They were for all practical purposes invisible to the boy and almost everyone who walked by. But not to the woman. She saw them. She had the courage to look into their faces, and when she did, some of the lost seemed to see something in Dot’s eyes that gave them hope. They didn’t know what she had that made her care for them, but they could sense her love. Though they probably didn’t know it, as she walked on with her grandson, the silver-haired woman said a prayer for each of the city’s forgotten souls.

After stepping over some of the most famous names on the globe and strolling by many of the best-known landmarks on the West Coast, this duo from different generations completed their trek at the Chinese Theater. The building’s huge marquee trumpeted the latest biblical classic, King of Kings. As Dot bought the tickets, little Jim’s eyes zeroed in on the footprints and handprints in the cement all around him. Clark Gable was there, as were John Wayne and Roy Rogers. Even at his young age, the child knew this would be a day he would always remember, and he was so grateful his grandmother had made it all possible. What he didn’t know at that time was that it would be the blending of what he was to see that day with the images of what he failed to notice that would forever shape his life and put him on an avenue that would touch millions.
